These shingles are one of the most fashionable roofing materials which involve around 80% of residential roofing market. These shingles are used to give a home attractive look and design.
Benefits & Shortcomings –
· Asphalt shingles are made of fiber mat or fiber glass saturated with asphalt and layered with mineral particles.
· It is available in traditional 3-tab shingles and architectural shingles.
· It is not eco friendly as it is a petroleum product but it can be recycled.
· It is not very durable.
· Asphalt shingles are moderate in weight.
· These are good fire and wind resistance.
· Installing shingles is easy if done by experienced roofing contractor.
· Cost wise these are inexpensive to reasonable.
Metal –
The metal roofing materials are expensive than asphalt and lasts longer.
Benefits & Shortcomings –
· Metal roofs are generally composed of steel, copper, zinc or aluminum.
· These are available in sheets or shingles.
· It absorbs third less heat than the asphalt shingles. It can be recycled.
· Durability completely depends on the metal type.
· Metal roofs are very lightweight.
· Good resistance to fire and wind but failed in absorbing heat.
· Cost varies from moderate to expensive depending on the metal type.
Clay Tile –
Clay tile roofing are good fire resistant material and highly durable.
Benefits & Shortcomings –
· Clay tiles are prepared from the natural clay.
· It gives a traditional Italian and Spanish look.
· Eco-Friendly as prepared with natural materials.
· Long lasting and require very low maintenance.
· Fragile and can break.
· Heavy in weight and require unbreakable roof framing to support.
· Good fire resistant and wind resistant capability.
· Expensive in terms of cost.
Concrete Tile –
Concrete tiles are less expensive than the clay tiles. These are heavy but durable.
Benefits & Shortcomings –
· Concrete tiles are prepared from a mixture of Portland cement and sand.
· Formed with the natural materials and completely Eco-Friendly.
· Highly durable but brittle.
· Very heavy in weight and require unbreakable roof framing to support.
· Good fire and wind resistance.
· Cost is reasonable.
